Becky Brown Photography – The first 5 years

Last week after I kicked off my 2013 wedding season I was thinking back on all the weddings I’ve shot over the years. I realized that this April (the 19th) to be exact was the anniversary of the first wedding I shot as a lead photographer in 2008. Prior to that I had been doing some second shooting, families etc., but it was my first wedding as Becky Brown Photography. I can’t believe it’s been 5 years since that day. It truly feels like yesterday. I spent a couple hours this week going back through all the weddings and sessions I’ve shot over these last few years and realizing how truly lucky I am to be doing this.

Just like with everything in life there have been amazing moments and there have been awful moments. It’s cheesy to say, but I’ve laughed and I’ve cried – heck I laughed and I cried just writing this blog post! I’ve been so happy that I thought I would explode and there have been days I wanted to throw my camera in the lake. But at the end of the day I wouldn’t change any of it. The hard times have helped me grown as a photographer and a business woman. The great moments will forever live in my memory as a reminder why I do what I do.

So I say thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who has let me be a part of your wedding day, let me photograph your family , or let me capture the newest member of the family coming into the world, let me take your engagement photos and share in your love.

Thank you to my friends, boyfriend, parents and family for supporting me and listening to me during the ups and downs over the years!

Thank you to all my amazing assistants that have spent hours shooting with me at weddings and held reflectors and lugged around my gear! I wouldn’t be where I am without you all!

Thank you all for an amazing 5 years of business. I look forward to the next 5!

Becky

Although I don’t have a favorite wedding or a favorite session, but rather favorite parts of every shoot I wanted to do a recap of some of the ones that stood out to me over the last 5 years! I’d love to recap them all, but this would be the longest blog post ever! Enjoy!

I have to start with that first wedding. I went back and re-edited a photo from that wedding … its amazing how far I’ve come in my editing process!

This wedding wins the award for Most Random Wedding I’ve ever shot! I was in Cancun on vacation (also 2008) with friends when I saw this couple about  to get married on the beach right near us. Of course I noticed right away that they didn’t have a photographer and I went an introduced myself to a bridemaid and offered to shoot it. I literally ran up to my room to get my camera (yes I brought my camera on vacation) and shot their wedding on the beach while I was still in my bathing suit and cover up! haha…. thanks to Emily and Darci for this photo of me in action!

I spent about 3 and half years working as a freelance photographer for Cummins in Columbus. As part of those duties I took a lot (thousands) of headshots. This was how I spent every other Monday for most of that 3.5 years!

2009 was a crazy year of weddings and personal projects. I had a show of my personal work in Bloomington and Columbus, which also landed me on the cover of the Columbus Republic’s She Magazine. I had no idea I was on the cover until it came out and that day was wild as I got calls and messages from tons of people! I felt like a mini celebrity for the day 🙂

One of my favorite venues this year was Martha’s Orchard which is on the west side of Indy. Thanks to Kristen and Derek for allowing me to shot their wedding there:) You can see the full wedding HERE. Hint, Hint…. I’d love to shoot at this venue again 🙂

2009 was also the first year I did Help Portrait which is an amazing opportunity to give back with photography. You can find out more about this event here – http://help-portrait.com/

I’ve shot at Clifty Falls Inn 3 times now – in the summer , in the fall and in the winter. Who is getting married there in the spring? I need to round out my seasons!                                                                   This is from Kelsy and Alburn’s 2009 wedding.

I started off 2010 with some snow! One of my  best friends and roommate at the time was engaged and we’d been waiting for some snow to come along for photos. Luckily she and her fiance were home when a big snow storm came through and we braved the cold for a spur of the moment session! HERE  is Lindsey and Brad’s full session.

One memory I’ll never forget is my sister’s wedding in 201o where with the help of my amazing cousin Heather I was the maid of honor and the photographer…. thank god I only have one sister because it was crazy! (I swear I don’t drink while I’m shooting, but I couldn’t resist this photo of beer in one hand, camera in the other in my bridesmaids dress!). See there full wedding HERE.

My first Brownstown wedding was in 2010 and every year since then I’ve shot a wedding there with a reception in Pewter Hall! Thanks to Becca and Phil for being the ones to kick off this tradition!See their full wedding HERE.

201o was also the year I shot Ashley and Tyler’s wedding in Bloomington, which is hands down has had the most wild weather and events of any wedding I’ve ever shot. They were amazing throughout the entire day despite the curveballs that kept being thrown their way. Between the power outage at the resort, the scorching heat during the day followed by a summer thunder storm and a trip to the hospital for one guest it’s one I’ll never forget! You can read their entire story HERE.

2010 also took me to NYC for my cousin Ron’s wedding! I can’t wait to return this fall for another Manhattan wedding and even better his lovely wife Renata will be second shooting with me!
Here is the full blog post from their wedding – HERE.
I  made a stop at the B&H photography superstore while I was there …. aka…. what I imagine heaven to be like 🙂
In the fall of 2010 I also got to photography this gorgeous wedding in Brownstown, IN. I’ve been lucky enough to be with Brittany & Clayton through their engagement, wedding and maternity sessions! It’s always great to see my wedding clients again as family clients! Click  HERE for their engagement, HERE for their wedding and HERE for their 2012 maternity session.
Also fell in love with this IU couple – Emily and Brian at their 2010 Indianapolis wedding. You can see the full post HERE.
What a better way to ring in 2011 than with a wedding?! I got to cheers to the new year with Karen & Johnathan!  See their full wedding HERE and HERE.
2011 brought so many amazing weddings, couples and families  that I just can’t even begin to go through them all. I’ve really been focusing on weddings in this post, but I do shoot some family photography as well and in 2011 I got to photograph my youngest client ever, just hours old! I was “on call” when Beth and Jared were expecting their second child and met them at the hospital for Brendan’s first photo session. It was truly a special moment to be a part of! You can see the full post HERE.
In July I was set to photograph the wedding of my friends Kate & Greg in Chicago. Little did I know they were going to pull a fast one and get married at their rehearsal dinner! You can read more about that HERE. And for the full “wedding” recap you can check out HERE and HERE.
I know I said I don’t have favorite, but this one might be the exception mostly because it’s so different than most of my “normal” images. At the end of Sarah and David’s engagement session it had started raining pretty hard and I wanted to attempt some rain shots. Luckily for me they allowed me to play with some lighting and this is the end result 🙂 You can see their full session HERE.
You’ve probably seen these adorable faces all over my facebook and blog! These are my most photographed kiddos and the wonderful children of my friends Brandy and Dave (Davearino). I’ve had the pleasure of photographing them many times over the years. So much so that they now tell me where they want to go and pose for their photos!
In October I went to Mexico and back in a day… yes I said in a day. I freelanced for Cummins for almost 4 years and this trip took me to a plant in Mexico to take a group shot of the CEO with all 500 or so employees. I had to get harnessed in and wear a hard hat as they took me up on a forklift for the shot. But first I had to get my blood pressure checked out, which actually made my blood pressure higher just thinking about it! I wish I had a tape of the conversation I had with my forklift operator, somehow between my rusty Spanish and his limited English we got it all set up and worked out but I sure could have used Senora Jackson to translate for me!
What’s that a wedding with a bride and groom who have the same name?! Yep- Jami and Jamie! HERE is the link to their full wedding. Can’t wait to see them again this year as I shoot her sister’s wedding!
Also in 2011 my wonderful assistant/associate photographer Allie got married! You can see her full wedding HERE. And learn more about having her shoot your wedding HERE!
The award for best baby rolls goes to this adorable guy Caleb. I just want to squeeze him! Full session HERE.
I ended 2011 with Jen and Mike’s New Year’s Eve wedding in downtown Indianapolis! You can see their full wedding HERE.
Phew – are you still with me?! This brings us to 2012 which was a year of HUGE change for me and my business as I moved to Chicago. It was something I’ve been wanting to do for years and I finally made it happen! I spent the summer doing an internship with a food photographer (www.chrislitwin.com) in the city which is something I’ve always been interested in and I  have been building my wedding business in the city! Here is a video (yes video) that I shot of some behind the scenes action while working with him. I have no plans on entering the video world anytime soon but it was interesting to learn. http://vimeo.com/43991414.  Don’t worry though I am still continuing to shoot in Indiana and am back and forth often! In fact for 2013 I have currently have weddings in 4 different states!
So here is one of my first Chicago weddings with my wonderful friend’s Jackie and Mark from IU (Although I shot in Chicago before I actually moved). Full wedding HERE.
You just don’t get this skyline in Indy 🙂 I loved this e-session with Krista and Billy! See the full session HERE.
This wedding holds the record for the highest temperature of any wedding I’ve ever shot. I think the heat index was about 100…. yikes. Thanks to Britney and Aaron for being troopers in the heat!
You can see their full wedding post HERE.
The view from a networking boat cruise I went on this summer…. This is the way to network people!
This photo from a family session with the Thackery’s in 2012 holds the record for most Facebook likes I’ve ever gotten on a photo!
I dabble in Senior photography as well! This is Katelyn the sister of one of my grooms from 2011! Loved seeing all the family again as they joined in for a few family photos during her session as well!
You can see her full session HERE.
Over the years I’ve submitted several weddings to wedding blogs and a few have been chosen, but I’ve always wanted to get featured on Junebug weddings which is my favorite blog. Well in 2012 with the help of Becca and Mike that goal came a reality as their Chicago wedding was featured! You can see the feature HERE and my blog post of their day HERE.
Another amazing moment came in November as I photographed my first City Hall wedding  and my first Monday wedding with the wonderful Susan and Dan in Chicago. This day was amazing and so much more relaxed than my regular weddings.  Because of this I’m working on launching my newest venture – Elope to Chicago. It is a site that will be dedicated to those eloping or having small weekday weddings!  You can see their full post HERE.
And my last wedding of 2012 was one I will never forget as well. I’ve shot a few “winter” weddings, but none had never been snowy! So I hoped and hoped for snow and I got more than I could have imagined! This wedding was amazing! Stephanie and Gary were awesome to work with and willing to venture out in the snow with me. Their wedding party was equally as great and I got to work with some of my favorite Indiana vendors – Love’s Reel and Just Breathe Events. You can see their entire snowy day recap HERE.
We’re only 4 months into 2013 but it’s starting off great. I did two great bridal shows, a fun styled shoot with some Chicago vendors and kicked off my season with a wonderful esession with an old friend and a wonderful wedding last weekend! With so many wedding I can’t wait to shoot this year and the fact that I have not one, not two, but three good friends engaged right now this year is sure to be one of the best yet!
First engagement session of the year with Barb and Ali!
Here is a recent food photo from a project my mom and I have been working on 🙂
First wedding of 2013 – Rachel and Brian!
If you’ve made it this far thanks for reading and for all your support!
I’m going to end with a few random photos that I didn’t quite know where to put!
My trusty stool that travels with to my weddings…. hey I’m short people!
Coming in a close second for my most photographed client would be the Abel Family. I’ve been taking Madelyn’s picture since she was still in her mom’s belly!
Here is the Abel Family’s most recent session – http://beckybrownphotography.com/blog/2012/12/10/the-abel-family-2/
My favorite wedding tradition amongst my Indiana volleyball guys…. a Boyz to Men serenade  for the Bride!
Father daughter dance that made me cry like a baby… from Bill and Lynn’s 2012 wedding
My favorite wedding guests Dave and JoAnn… I think we’ve been at 3 or 4 wedding together now over the years? Maybe soon they’ll be the Bride and Groom (hint hint Dave 😉
I’m sure they will be thrilled that I chose the image of them with mustaches for this! haha
It’s not a wedding until I’ve laid on the ground at some point…. which is why I tend to wear all black haha
You never know where you will meet clients! I met Lindsay at the apartment complex I was living at in Indy and had the pleasure of getting to know her and her now husband David, her amazing parents (her mom is a photographer/writer) and welcoming their new addition to the family this fall!
A big thank you to some of my best friend Megan and Lauren for letting me shoot your engagement sessions at IU! I was a bridesmaid at Megan and Jordan’s 2009 wedding and will be doing this same this fall at Lauren and Brad’s! Emily and Darci if you’re reading this you’re up next!
See Lauren and Brad’s full post HERE.
And last, but not least me shooting in the snow!

Love Story Engagement Contest Voting!

VOTING HAS ENDED – THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICPATED!

REBECCA & NATHAN WON!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Welcome! I am so excited about this contest and I’ve had some great entries from some amazing couples so it’s going to be hard to predict a winner!

Below are their stories (in no particular order). I’ve decided not to include photos because I really want people to read the stories and choose based the words rather than just scrolling through the images and not reading anything. Let’s face it, we all have a short attention span these days!

To vote you much scroll all the way to the bottom and choose your favorite and then hit “vote”. If you don’t hit vote it will not be counted. Commenting on your favorites is great, but it also does not count as a vote.

Good luck to everyone!!!  Voting continues until 7pm central time on Thursday Feb. 28th!

#1 Rebecca & Nathan – engaged on Rebecca’s birthday 10/9/12 and getting married 12/28/13!

” The story of how we met and how he proposed are wonderfully intertwined. We had been on Ball State University’s campus together for 3 years and have created so many wonderful memories there. Nathan knew the best way to tie all those wonderful memories of our past into the promise of our future.  He sent me on a scavenger hunt on my birthday while just making me think I was getting some cheering up on an uneventful Tuesday afternoon.

I set out to the spots that were important to us and I was met at each location by people who have been important to us.  I was sent to where he first saw me, at the Scramble Light on campus when I was visiting Ball State with my parents.  He has always given me a hard time for not remembering bumping into him there.  Then I was sent to where we saw each other again and spent a large portion of our relationship, in the music rehearsal building on campus.  That has also been something he’s teased me about because I was so nervous auditioning for the University Singers that I didn’t remember seeing him again!

After that I traveled to the spot on the White River where we spent the whole night talking and finding out how much alike we were.  I know that night is when I fell in love with him. I traveled to more spots until I came to Beneficence, the statue we both love, and is a symbol of the school we love so much.  I was met there with not just a note, but also a CD which was to entertain me while I traveled to Indianapolis.  When I got there my first stop was Lucas Oil Stadium. Both of us are life-long Colts fans, making it the perfect place to begin in the city. I was met there by a friend who drove me to the canal by the Indianapolis Zoo.

There Nathan stood at the end of a walkway.  When we reached each other we walked along the canal as he told me wonderful things about how he loved me and how he wanted to make me remember all the good times they had that sometimes get buried in the day to day grind. He told me how he wanted to spend the rest of our lives together and he didn’t want to forget any of the parts of our history.  As we neared the end of the walk, he turned me around to view the Indianapolis skyline.  The view was stunning and as we stood there in the lights of the city we love, he got down on one knee and made me the happiest girl in the world. “

#2 Maria & Brad – engaged on  10/28/12  & getting married on 05-04-2013

“I love a saying who’s author I do not know that goes a little something like this, “It’s so amazing when someone comes to your life and you expect nothing out of it, but suddenly…..there….right in front of you is everything you ever needed.” When we saw each other for the first time I was looking at paint colors for my new car and he was grabbing a cup of coffee. I remember seeing him, but that was all. I didn’t end up seeing him again for about a month.

Each week when I got my car washed and detailed I got to see glimpses of him. He always had a smile, a wave and a cup of coffee in his hand. What little conversation I had ever had with him had been about the car or polite conversation as he worked. Though as the weeks went by our conversations got a little longer (I always thought it was because the tree sap on my hood took forever to clean off). Each week he seemed to linger more and smile more, but I always thought that was because I was funny.

He even seemed to find me when I took my car in for it’s first oil change. He fixed a scratch on my car, but didn’t ever say much. So it surprised me one afternoon when he pulled out a card with his number (which I still have) and said I should give him a call if I ever needed anything. It took me about 12 hours to finally text him to thank him for being so nice and for fixing a random problem he fixed weeks before. (This is where expecting nothing comes in for me. I thought he was just being nice because I had gotten a few new scratches on my car.) He called the next morning and we talked for four hours. Three days later we went on our first date. It wasn’t over complicated, just a root beer under the stars. We’ve seen each other just about every day since.

His proposal came just as unexpectedly as him entering my life. It was a normal Sunday night. He asked my mom and me out to dinner at Applebee’s. It was a normal dinner. We ate, had fun and at the end of the meal I packed up everyone’s leftovers and chattered on about what we were going to do when we got home.

I wasn’t paying attention. He asked me if he could ask me a question. I turned and said “Sure sweetie” and there in front of me was an open black box with the prettiest solitaire I’d ever seen. In that moment time stopped. All I heard was Hubert say, “Be my wife……marry me.” I was in shock, and instead of the big “YES” I always thought I’d say with I was asked I responded with one liners like, “Are you doing this here?” and “Are you serious?” He laughed and asked again. I think he asked about 4 times before it sank in he was asking me to marry him. I fought back so many tears and said YES! (FINALLY! My brain was finally working!). I looked over at my mom, tears in my eyes and there she was with her camera. (She already knew!!)

Aside from my blundered “yes,” everything else was perfect. He asked my mom for permission to marry me, the ring fit and he surprised me….in front of all of Applebee’s. I now know why my friends always quoted this line to me when I was frustrated with dating, “Someday, someone will walk into your life and make you realize why it never worked out with anyone else…..,” because I wouldn’t want to spend forever with anyone else.”

#3 Betty & Russ  – engaged on 1/22/13 and getting married 2/1/14

“Let me set the scene……I lived in Dallas and he lived here.  I had been single for 7 years and him for 3.  Neither of us were looking for anyone when we met.On June 15, 2011, I sat down in the lobby of an office that turned out to belong to the man I would spend the rest of my life with.  I was there to audit his Information Security/Business Continuity programs for my company.  As soon as I saw him (not knowing who he was), I told myself “That man is going to be my husband”.  We introduced ourselves and that was it.  Due to the work conflict, we flirted but kept everything strictly professional.
On September 19 (his birthday), a week after all of the work was complete, he called and said “If I fly to Dallas this weekend, will you go to dinner with me?” Of course I said yes.  During that week, we sat up till dawn almost every night talking on the phone and all night a few times. He flew down on September 27, we went to dinner and and he told me that he had loved me from the moment he saw me and that he hoped that didn’t scare me off.  We have been together ever since.  One of us flew back and forth each weekend.
By January, we both knew that we had found the other soul that God had specifically made for the other.  I moved to Chicago in May of 2012.On January 22, we were getting ready to go to the Blackhawks home opener (the Hawks won by the way) and I met home at his office.  While we were sitting there talking, he pulled open his top desk drawer and pulled out a small box and said, “I was going to do this on Valentines Day but sitting here looking at you, I just can’t wait”.  He came over and kneeled in front of me and said “This was Grams engagement ring.  It’s a placeholder ring till I get the one I want.  I would love it if you would wear it and agree to spend the rest of your life with me.”  His Grams had passed away 23 days earlier (she was 101). I told home “the ring is perfect and it means more to me that any other ring you could have given me and of course I will.  There is no one else for me.”
On February 23, I gave him a framed print of a QR scan code.  When he scanned it, it started playing “Marry Me” by Train.  When it got to that phrase, I handed him a little blue box.  I told him “I would be so honored if you wear my ring and spend the rest of your life loving me”.  He was completely shocked. We would both like for the wedding to be today but want to have the most perfect wedding possible.  We want it to reflect that there is truly one person out there that God has made for the other.  It may take a while to find him/her but they are there and the love is so amazingly strong and there is no better feeling than knowing you’ve found that person.”

#4 Andrea & Steven – engaged on 12/31/12 at 11:11 and getting married in September of 2015

” I first met Steve my last year of Undergrad at Purdue University and the second I saw him I knew I had to meet him, and we have been together ever since.  He is the love of my life and has supported me through my last semester of school and going after my career goals which required me to move to Virginia on his birthday actually.  After being in a long distance relationship for 8 months our love grew stronger and he flew out here on Christmas day so I could have someone I love to spend the holiday with.Every night for the past 2.5 years at 11:11 Steve and I always tell each other to make a wish, and on Dec 31st my wish came true when he asked me to marry him.  It was just him, our dog and I in my apartment with candles lit and “I don’t want to miss a thing” playing he got down on one knee.  It was perfect for us, but unfortunately he had to fly back to Michigan the next afternoon and we only get to see each other every 2-3 months.”
#5 Tracey and Brandon – engaged 6/28/10 and getting married spring of 2013
“Brandon and I met in November 2009 through mutual friends, one of my best friends and his as well…it’s a wonder we never met before really. Anyhow, I was planning to go shopping with my friend Kristy and Chris her boyfriend in Indianapolis and they asked if it would be okay if they invited their friend Brandon, I agreed. When he came over to meet us I remember standing at the door looking at this handsome guy with the bluest eyes and sweetest smile! As we were driving to Indianapolis (me and Kristy in the back and the guys up front) we were talking about foods we liked and he said he loved blue cheesing salad dressing and that so happened to be my favorite (apparently not many people like it haha) I said I love blue cheese dressing and I heard him tell Chris “I’m going to marry that girl” haha! It’s funny I tell people we met through friends, but were hooked because of salad dressing! The rest of the day he was such a gentleman, bought me lunch (and it wasn’t even a date) plus cheesecake, now that’s a winner!

I have two amazing little girls who he immediately fell in love with and ever since we have been inseparable! He proposed on June 28, 2010 at the house, we were cuddling on the couch watching a movie and he was telling me how much I meant to him and asked me if I was really going to marry him, I said absolutely and he whipped out his hand which held a beautiful ring and said that I should wear it rather than him! I cried obviously, called my mom, took photos and cried some more.
Brandon is the most amazing person that I have ever met! Not only did he fall in love with me, he fell in live with my two beautiful daughters as well! We became the family that I wanted to much for my little girls, he’s my rock, my best friend, my soul mate. I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life with anyone other than him!”

Love Story Engagement Contest 2013!

After the crazy and amazing response from the photo of the year canvas contest I ran last month I thought I’d do another! With Valentine’s day yesterday many new couples are engaged and love is in the air!

I did this contest a couple years ago, but I chose the winner. This time I’m going to leave it up to you guys! You will be able to vote for your favorite couple’s love story and the one with the most votes will win a free engagement session with me!

Here are the contest rules and information:

1. You must be recently engaged, although it doesn’t matter when your wedding date is (as long as you aren’t already married)

2. You must be able to do the session in Chicago, Indianapolis or Columbus, IN or be willing to travel to one of those locations.

** or NYC if you can be available for the couple of days I’m there in the first week of Sept. for a wedding 🙂

3. I am all over the place for weddings, so I will send dates I’m available depending on who wins and where they are located.

4. You must not have already done an engagement session with another photographer (sorry I don’t want to make any of my fellow photographers mad or have them thinking I’m trying to steal clients! )

5. There must be a minimum of 5 couples sign up for this … it is a contest afterall!

6. You need to send me an email at becky@beckybrownphotography.com with the following information:

– Your names (I will only publish the first names)

– The proposal date and the wedding date (if set, if not just say TBD)

– Where you live (this is just for me) and where the wedding will be (if in a different location)

– A brief paragraph telling me your “love story”.  How you met, how he proposed and anything else that you think might win you the contest! Keep in mind I will likely be copying and pasting these paragraphs so don’t include anything you don’t want published on the blog!

– A photo of the two of you (if you have one from the day/night of proposal showing off the new ring that’s even better).

All entries must be sent to me by Sunday the 24th at 9pm!!! . The blog will go up on the following Monday and voting will end at 7pm (central time) on Thursday Feb. 28th.

Best of luck to everyone! Can’t wait to read everyone’s stories!!!

Becky
