Changes for Family sessions in 2012

Hey everyone! As the new year starts I find myself looking back at the last year in my business and thinking about what is to come for 2012.

I can’t stress how much I am blessed to have such amazing clients. Not just in 2011, but from day one I’ve had the pleasure of working with so many great families and couples. From newborns in their first few days to celebrating the big day with all my brides and grooms I’ve been able to grow my business and my photography skills into what they are today.

Which brings me to present day. I’ve made some decisions about the future of my business for 2012 that I think will allow me to grow and focus my talents in the areas that will benefit my clients the most.

The first big announcement is that I will no longer be doing in home family/children/newborn sessions. Although I love the little ones, I’ve never seen myself as a studio photographer and I feel my talents and images are much better  and more creative when not confined to a studio set up.

Secondly I will only be doing family sessions in the form of mini sessions for 2012. I’ve done a few days of these in the past and they’ve really seemed to work for me and my clients. Looking back at 2011 and the insane amount of miles I spent in my car driving to sessions and weddings I’ve decided that I will do a few mini sessions in different locations throughout the year instead. Some sessions I spent more time in my car driving to than I actually spent shooting. It makes the most sense for me moving forward to convert to this. You will be able to purchase multiple mini sessions if you’d like to have a longer shoot that is more like what I’ve done in the past.

If you have suggestions or specific places you’d like me to hold these mini sessions please email me at becky@beckybrownphotography.com. I will be announcing the dates in advance on my facebook - www.facebook.com/beckybrownphotography. Please “like” my page to get the update. Right now their will be at least one spring, one summer and one fall set of mini sessions. More may be added depending on demand.

Of course I’m sure their will be exceptions to this rule. If you’ve already contacted me about a session, no worries, I will still have you on the books. Or if you have families members coming in from out of state for a specific date let me know and we can work something out.

If you are interested in studio sessions I can suggest a couple of local photographers that specialize in this type of photography and do great work. In addition some of them have actual studios that aren’t your typical Sears set up!

I hope everyone understands my reasoning and decision to do this. Again, I appreciate all the love and support over the years and hope to have continued success and see some of your smiling faces in 2012 :)

Cheers,

Becky

Allie and Clark :Wedding – North Vernon, In 11/11/11

Well I’ve already introduced you to Allie – my associate shooter for 2012, but I haven’t blogged her fabulous November wedding yet!

She married her high school sweetheart Clark on 11/11/11 in our hometown of North Vernon, In. I felt so blessed to be a part of Allie’s day – she was a gorgeous bride and it’s always nice to shoot in my hometown in the church I grew up in. PS the church looks AMAZING with all the updates and restorations that they’ve done in the last year. I walked in and thought I was in the wrong place haha.

Below are some of my favorites – so hard to choose! Another thanks to Allie’s cousin and my friend Emily for her hard work on the flowers and a thank you to everyone who made the reception hall look amazing as well!

I snuck out to do photos with the guys while the girls finished up getting ready

And it was time for the girls!

Since Allie has been on the wedding scene while shooting as an assistant with me it should be no surprise that she chose to do a First Look.

It’s always less stressful to get everything out of the way pre-ceremony and in mid November on a Friday it was dark by about 6. If we had waited until after the ceremony for photos it would have been pitch black for all of them. Just a lesson for future brides getting married later in the year!

And then it was off to the reception!

Why have one cake with you can have 8?!

Love that they had a live band play ! And below is the groom for my May 19th wedding! Love it!

And then we snuck outside for some fun with the lightsabers!

And lastly me and the happy couple!

2012 Basic Workshop

I’m soooo excited to be writing this post!!!!!! (in case the insane amount of exclamation points didn’t give it away). It’s been a long time in the works but I will be hosting my first Photography Basics workshop on Saturday January 28th!

I find that I get alot of emails and messages wanting help on different shooting scenerios or advice on what camera or lens to get etc. I decided that I wanted to put together a workshop to answer all those questions and then some for anyone who is interested.

The workshop will run from 8am-noon on January 28th and it will be held at the Hotel Indigo in Columbus, IN. I wanted to pick a location that would be easy to get to from many places and had parking. If you’re coming from out of town and want to stay the night before the rooms at Indigo are really cool and it’s within walking distance to several restaurants and bars. Or if you have kiddos the new Commons playground is just 2 blocks away so you can have Dad watch them for a few hours while they play there!

We will be covering several topics in the workshop including, but not limited to :

- mastering your camera : ISO, shutter speed and aperture

- how to use available light to your benefit, both indoors and out

- posing clients and controlling the situation

- I will also briefly touch on post production and editing as well as business basics (contracts etc).

This is a BASICS workshop so if you’re an experienced shooter or have been in business for awhile this is not the workshop for you. I may do a more intermediate/advanced workshop in the spring when we can actually get some models and go outside to shoot.

However, if you’re just starting out in your photography business or are wanting to learn how to take better images of your family and friends this IS the workshop for you! It is for all types of shooters – weddings, family, children, maternity etc. The only requirement is that you own a camera that allows you to shoot in Manual mode ( this includes most entry level DSLR’s such as the Canon Rebel , but no point and shoot’s. The information I’ll be presenting is based on being able to control and adjust your camera setting which you can do with a point and shoot).

THERE ARE ONLY 10 SPOTS AVAILABLE !!  So don’t delay on signing up!

Cost for the 4 hour workshop is $150 and includes the workshop, a 45 minute one-on-one Skype or phone session with Becky to follow up or ask questions anytime after the workshop, breakfast :) , a packet of the information presented and some great giveaways and prizes!

If you have a friend that would like to come as well please email me becky@beckybrownphotography.com to receive a coupon code for each of you to get $25 off the fee. (not valid with any other coupons or discounts)

Can’t wait!!!!!

Becky

*** All sales are FINAL! If something happens and you can’t make it you can sell your seat to someone else I just need to know in advance.***

Meet Allie!

I’d like to officially announce my amazing associate for 2012 – Allie. She will be shooting weddings under the Becky Brown Photography name. Allie has been assisting me at weddings for the past couple of years and I’ve had the chance to watch her grow and learn as a photographer. In 2012 she will be shooting as a lead photographer for me, allowing us to expand our reach to a wider range of brides!

I can’t wait for 2012 and all the exciting possibilities that are to come! You can find more information HERE about packages and prices for booking Allie! And you can always contact me via email at becky@beckybrownphotography.com with questions.

Here is a little Q&A with Allie so you can get to know her better as well as a few photos from her wedding this past November and some images she’s shot while assisting with me.

How did you get started in photography? I was fascinated with this illusion of freezing moments in time; it’s like a superpower! I fell in love with taking photographs of my pets. I started going through disposable cameras like crazy. That went on for several years before my parents bought me my first digital camera.

What is your favorite story or memory from shooting as an assistant with Becky? My favorite wedding has been Ashley and Tyler’s. It was scorching hot, then that turned into a horrible storm, the power went out before the ceremony, and I think someone even broke a bone at one point, but at the end of the day, the bride and groom had beautiful photographs, were ecstatic to be married, and everyone had a good time. It was crazy to be behind the scenes and think that everything that could go wrong did and still pull off your job. Very rewarding.

(Allie on her big day!)

Since you are also a recent bride :) can you share some advice to future brides on their big day? Relax! Give your self plenty of time to get ready and truly enjoy your day. Do a make-up and hair test run before the day of so that you allot enough time to not rush around pre-ceremony. At the end of the day, you WILL be married, and you have to remember that no little snag or set back will change that.

Becky was your wedding photographer – can you share a story or comment on what that experience was like and why you chose her? I can’t think of anyone else I would have wanted to hang out with for 10 hours J Becky is so laid back but at the same time professional. She knows what shots she needs to get to capture how special this day is, and she also works with you to ensure that all of your special touches are remembered too. She holds the day together. From creating a time schedule of the entire day to pinning on boutonnières, she’s the complete package.

((Love this shot below that Allie took during Jami and Jamie’s first look)

Since Christmas is right around the corner, If you could have Santa bring you one piece of equipment that you don’t already have what would it be? Ah! So many things I would love to get my hands on. I have been looking into the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto lens, so if he happens across one of those in his bag, he can drop it on by.

What is your favorite part of shooting a wedding day? The first look! I know that not everyone does these, but it’s by far my favorite part of any wedding day. Getting to see their faces as they see each other for the first time is wonderful. It adds to the experience that it’s only them, no one else around (except the photog!) After the first look, the bride and groom are always so relaxed and happy. They don’t have to bottle up their nervousness throughout the entire ceremony!

(Detail shots Allie did from Chris and Juliet’s October wedding)

What has been your favorite or most memorable detail from any of the weddings you’ve shot? Every wedding had something spectacular that I put in my memory bank as I was planning my own wedding last year. I’m always impressed with the creativeness of each couple. I don’t think I can pick one single detail!

Mention anything else you’d like to tell brides about yourself or your shooting style or how excited you etc. I take a journalistic approach to each wedding or event I shoot. I love to see the progression of the day laid out in photographs when it’s all said and done. It’s neat to see the transformation that everyone goes through as they prepare for one of the most wonderful days they will ever experience. I’m also huge into detail shots because I know how much time is put into every little part of the day. I love, love, love my macro lens!

Below are more images that Allie has shot over the years while assisting with me.

Jami and Jamie : Wedding – Seymour/Brownstown, IN 11/5/11

As 2011 is coming to an end I’m finally getting around to blogging my November weddings. November was one of the busiest months of the year for me but also one of the best. So to kick off the month I had the pleasure of shooting Jami and Jamie’s wedding in southern Indiana… yep you saw that right… never before have I had a bride and groom with the same name. So all day it was boy Jamie and girl Jami haha.

You may remember these two from their engagement photos back in the summer. In case you missed those they can be found HERE.

We started out the day at the salon in Columbus before heading out to the church in Seymour. It was a gorgeous fall day with mild temps and pretty leaves changing everywhere…. perfect settings for a wedding :) Followed up by the reception at Pewter Hall. I seem to manage to book at least one wedding a year there so this was my annual trip for the year!

Here are some of my favorites from the day! Congrats to Jami and Jamie!

Hair Salon:La Mode Salon – Columbus, IN

Bridal Gown: That Special Touch – Columbus, IN

Cermony : St. Paul Luthern Church – Seymour, IN

Reception: Pewter Hall- Brownstown, In

DJ : Premier DJ’s

They chose to do a first look – which if you know me at all you know I love. It’s especially important later in the year when it starts getting dark earlier and earlier. If  you are having a ceremony later in the year in the evening be aware of what time sunset is because it could be pitch black by the time the ceremony is over and if you don’t see each other beforehand you won’t have gorgeous light to work with like in the photos below :)

And then it was ceremony time!

And then we took a sweet RV ride through the country to the reception- and making a quick stop on the way for more photos

And Reception time!!!
