Becky Brown Photography – The first 5 years

Last week after I kicked off my 2013 wedding season I was thinking back on all the weddings I’ve shot over the years. I realized that this April (the 19th) to be exact was the anniversary of the first wedding I shot as a lead photographer in 2008. Prior to that I had been doing some second shooting, families etc., but it was my first wedding as Becky Brown Photography. I can’t believe it’s been 5 years since that day. It truly feels like yesterday. I spent a couple hours this week going back through all the weddings and sessions I’ve shot over these last few years and realizing how truly lucky I am to be doing this.

Just like with everything in life there have been amazing moments and there have been awful moments. It’s cheesy to say, but I’ve laughed and I’ve cried – heck I laughed and I cried just writing this blog post! I’ve been so happy that I thought I would explode and there have been days I wanted to throw my camera in the lake. But at the end of the day I wouldn’t change any of it. The hard times have helped me grown as a photographer and a business woman. The great moments will forever live in my memory as a reminder why I do what I do.

So I say thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who has let me be a part of your wedding day, let me photograph your family , or let me capture the newest member of the family coming into the world, let me take your engagement photos and share in your love.

Thank you to my friends, boyfriend, parents and family for supporting me and listening to me during the ups and downs over the years!

Thank you to all my amazing assistants that have spent hours shooting with me at weddings and held reflectors and lugged around my gear! I wouldn’t be where I am without you all!

Thank you all for an amazing 5 years of business. I look forward to the next 5!

Becky

Although I don’t have a favorite wedding or a favorite session, but rather favorite parts of every shoot I wanted to do a recap of some of the ones that stood out to me over the last 5 years! I’d love to recap them all, but this would be the longest blog post ever! Enjoy!

I have to start with that first wedding. I went back and re-edited a photo from that wedding … its amazing how far I’ve come in my editing process!

This wedding wins the award for Most Random Wedding I’ve ever shot! I was in Cancun on vacation (also 2008) with friends when I saw this couple about  to get married on the beach right near us. Of course I noticed right away that they didn’t have a photographer and I went an introduced myself to a bridemaid and offered to shoot it. I literally ran up to my room to get my camera (yes I brought my camera on vacation) and shot their wedding on the beach while I was still in my bathing suit and cover up! haha…. thanks to Emily and Darci for this photo of me in action!

I spent about 3 and half years working as a freelance photographer for Cummins in Columbus. As part of those duties I took a lot (thousands) of headshots. This was how I spent every other Monday for most of that 3.5 years!

2009 was a crazy year of weddings and personal projects. I had a show of my personal work in Bloomington and Columbus, which also landed me on the cover of the Columbus Republic’s She Magazine. I had no idea I was on the cover until it came out and that day was wild as I got calls and messages from tons of people! I felt like a mini celebrity for the day 🙂

One of my favorite venues this year was Martha’s Orchard which is on the west side of Indy. Thanks to Kristen and Derek for allowing me to shot their wedding there:) You can see the full wedding HERE. Hint, Hint…. I’d love to shoot at this venue again 🙂

2009 was also the first year I did Help Portrait which is an amazing opportunity to give back with photography. You can find out more about this event here – http://help-portrait.com/

I’ve shot at Clifty Falls Inn 3 times now – in the summer , in the fall and in the winter. Who is getting married there in the spring? I need to round out my seasons!                                                                   This is from Kelsy and Alburn’s 2009 wedding.

I started off 2010 with some snow! One of my  best friends and roommate at the time was engaged and we’d been waiting for some snow to come along for photos. Luckily she and her fiance were home when a big snow storm came through and we braved the cold for a spur of the moment session! HERE  is Lindsey and Brad’s full session.

One memory I’ll never forget is my sister’s wedding in 201o where with the help of my amazing cousin Heather I was the maid of honor and the photographer…. thank god I only have one sister because it was crazy! (I swear I don’t drink while I’m shooting, but I couldn’t resist this photo of beer in one hand, camera in the other in my bridesmaids dress!). See there full wedding HERE.

My first Brownstown wedding was in 2010 and every year since then I’ve shot a wedding there with a reception in Pewter Hall! Thanks to Becca and Phil for being the ones to kick off this tradition!See their full wedding HERE.

201o was also the year I shot Ashley and Tyler’s wedding in Bloomington, which is hands down has had the most wild weather and events of any wedding I’ve ever shot. They were amazing throughout the entire day despite the curveballs that kept being thrown their way. Between the power outage at the resort, the scorching heat during the day followed by a summer thunder storm and a trip to the hospital for one guest it’s one I’ll never forget! You can read their entire story HERE.

2010 also took me to NYC for my cousin Ron’s wedding! I can’t wait to return this fall for another Manhattan wedding and even better his lovely wife Renata will be second shooting with me!
Here is the full blog post from their wedding – HERE.
I  made a stop at the B&H photography superstore while I was there …. aka…. what I imagine heaven to be like 🙂
In the fall of 2010 I also got to photography this gorgeous wedding in Brownstown, IN. I’ve been lucky enough to be with Brittany & Clayton through their engagement, wedding and maternity sessions! It’s always great to see my wedding clients again as family clients! Click  HERE for their engagement, HERE for their wedding and HERE for their 2012 maternity session.
Also fell in love with this IU couple – Emily and Brian at their 2010 Indianapolis wedding. You can see the full post HERE.
What a better way to ring in 2011 than with a wedding?! I got to cheers to the new year with Karen & Johnathan!  See their full wedding HERE and HERE.
2011 brought so many amazing weddings, couples and families  that I just can’t even begin to go through them all. I’ve really been focusing on weddings in this post, but I do shoot some family photography as well and in 2011 I got to photograph my youngest client ever, just hours old! I was “on call” when Beth and Jared were expecting their second child and met them at the hospital for Brendan’s first photo session. It was truly a special moment to be a part of! You can see the full post HERE.
In July I was set to photograph the wedding of my friends Kate & Greg in Chicago. Little did I know they were going to pull a fast one and get married at their rehearsal dinner! You can read more about that HERE. And for the full “wedding” recap you can check out HERE and HERE.
I know I said I don’t have favorite, but this one might be the exception mostly because it’s so different than most of my “normal” images. At the end of Sarah and David’s engagement session it had started raining pretty hard and I wanted to attempt some rain shots. Luckily for me they allowed me to play with some lighting and this is the end result 🙂 You can see their full session HERE.
You’ve probably seen these adorable faces all over my facebook and blog! These are my most photographed kiddos and the wonderful children of my friends Brandy and Dave (Davearino). I’ve had the pleasure of photographing them many times over the years. So much so that they now tell me where they want to go and pose for their photos!
In October I went to Mexico and back in a day… yes I said in a day. I freelanced for Cummins for almost 4 years and this trip took me to a plant in Mexico to take a group shot of the CEO with all 500 or so employees. I had to get harnessed in and wear a hard hat as they took me up on a forklift for the shot. But first I had to get my blood pressure checked out, which actually made my blood pressure higher just thinking about it! I wish I had a tape of the conversation I had with my forklift operator, somehow between my rusty Spanish and his limited English we got it all set up and worked out but I sure could have used Senora Jackson to translate for me!
What’s that a wedding with a bride and groom who have the same name?! Yep- Jami and Jamie! HERE is the link to their full wedding. Can’t wait to see them again this year as I shoot her sister’s wedding!
Also in 2011 my wonderful assistant/associate photographer Allie got married! You can see her full wedding HERE. And learn more about having her shoot your wedding HERE!
The award for best baby rolls goes to this adorable guy Caleb. I just want to squeeze him! Full session HERE.
I ended 2011 with Jen and Mike’s New Year’s Eve wedding in downtown Indianapolis! You can see their full wedding HERE.
Phew – are you still with me?! This brings us to 2012 which was a year of HUGE change for me and my business as I moved to Chicago. It was something I’ve been wanting to do for years and I finally made it happen! I spent the summer doing an internship with a food photographer (www.chrislitwin.com) in the city which is something I’ve always been interested in and I  have been building my wedding business in the city! Here is a video (yes video) that I shot of some behind the scenes action while working with him. I have no plans on entering the video world anytime soon but it was interesting to learn. http://vimeo.com/43991414.  Don’t worry though I am still continuing to shoot in Indiana and am back and forth often! In fact for 2013 I have currently have weddings in 4 different states!
So here is one of my first Chicago weddings with my wonderful friend’s Jackie and Mark from IU (Although I shot in Chicago before I actually moved). Full wedding HERE.
You just don’t get this skyline in Indy 🙂 I loved this e-session with Krista and Billy! See the full session HERE.
This wedding holds the record for the highest temperature of any wedding I’ve ever shot. I think the heat index was about 100…. yikes. Thanks to Britney and Aaron for being troopers in the heat!
You can see their full wedding post HERE.
The view from a networking boat cruise I went on this summer…. This is the way to network people!
This photo from a family session with the Thackery’s in 2012 holds the record for most Facebook likes I’ve ever gotten on a photo!
I dabble in Senior photography as well! This is Katelyn the sister of one of my grooms from 2011! Loved seeing all the family again as they joined in for a few family photos during her session as well!
You can see her full session HERE.
Over the years I’ve submitted several weddings to wedding blogs and a few have been chosen, but I’ve always wanted to get featured on Junebug weddings which is my favorite blog. Well in 2012 with the help of Becca and Mike that goal came a reality as their Chicago wedding was featured! You can see the feature HERE and my blog post of their day HERE.
Another amazing moment came in November as I photographed my first City Hall wedding  and my first Monday wedding with the wonderful Susan and Dan in Chicago. This day was amazing and so much more relaxed than my regular weddings.  Because of this I’m working on launching my newest venture – Elope to Chicago. It is a site that will be dedicated to those eloping or having small weekday weddings!  You can see their full post HERE.
And my last wedding of 2012 was one I will never forget as well. I’ve shot a few “winter” weddings, but none had never been snowy! So I hoped and hoped for snow and I got more than I could have imagined! This wedding was amazing! Stephanie and Gary were awesome to work with and willing to venture out in the snow with me. Their wedding party was equally as great and I got to work with some of my favorite Indiana vendors – Love’s Reel and Just Breathe Events. You can see their entire snowy day recap HERE.
We’re only 4 months into 2013 but it’s starting off great. I did two great bridal shows, a fun styled shoot with some Chicago vendors and kicked off my season with a wonderful esession with an old friend and a wonderful wedding last weekend! With so many wedding I can’t wait to shoot this year and the fact that I have not one, not two, but three good friends engaged right now this year is sure to be one of the best yet!
First engagement session of the year with Barb and Ali!
Here is a recent food photo from a project my mom and I have been working on 🙂
First wedding of 2013 – Rachel and Brian!
If you’ve made it this far thanks for reading and for all your support!
I’m going to end with a few random photos that I didn’t quite know where to put!
My trusty stool that travels with to my weddings…. hey I’m short people!
Coming in a close second for my most photographed client would be the Abel Family. I’ve been taking Madelyn’s picture since she was still in her mom’s belly!
Here is the Abel Family’s most recent session – http://beckybrownphotography.com/blog/2012/12/10/the-abel-family-2/
My favorite wedding tradition amongst my Indiana volleyball guys…. a Boyz to Men serenade  for the Bride!
Father daughter dance that made me cry like a baby… from Bill and Lynn’s 2012 wedding
My favorite wedding guests Dave and JoAnn… I think we’ve been at 3 or 4 wedding together now over the years? Maybe soon they’ll be the Bride and Groom (hint hint Dave 😉
I’m sure they will be thrilled that I chose the image of them with mustaches for this! haha
It’s not a wedding until I’ve laid on the ground at some point…. which is why I tend to wear all black haha
You never know where you will meet clients! I met Lindsay at the apartment complex I was living at in Indy and had the pleasure of getting to know her and her now husband David, her amazing parents (her mom is a photographer/writer) and welcoming their new addition to the family this fall!
A big thank you to some of my best friend Megan and Lauren for letting me shoot your engagement sessions at IU! I was a bridesmaid at Megan and Jordan’s 2009 wedding and will be doing this same this fall at Lauren and Brad’s! Emily and Darci if you’re reading this you’re up next!
See Lauren and Brad’s full post HERE.
And last, but not least me shooting in the snow!
